Premium feed-in tarrifs - some key features

Electricity Pricing

New customers signing up for the Premium Feed-in Tariff are likely to be offered "time-of-use" pricing - that is, a peak rate for power purchased during the day, and an off-peak rate power bought at night and on weekends.

These rates provide an opportunity to save, particualy if you can transfer any of your electricity use to cheaper, off peak times. For example, you can use washing machines and dryers on weekends or use timers or delay start functions on appliances during the week.

It might be useful to consider that the majority of households currently consume between 50 per cent and 65 per cent of their annual electricity needs during peak times (typically 7am to 11pm weekdays), and between 35 per cent and 50 per cent of their annual electricity needs during the off-peak times (typically 11pm to 7am weekdays plus all weekends).

When comparing offers, you should also consider:

- How much of your electricity consumption you might be able to shift to off-peak, cheaper times
- How much of your electricity usage will be supplied by solar panels (generally during the day during peak times)
- What value you'll receive from a Premium Feed-in Tariff for the the extra electricity supplied to the grid during the day

*Note that these times and rates may vary, depending on your electricity retailer. Retailers may also be able to provide information about your usage profile to assist you with calculations about the benefit of the Premium Feed-in Tariff to you.
